Wedges and the USGA
As many of you know, the USGA adopted a program to phase out the current grooves on wedges and irons. The reason was that PGA tour players are able to spin the ball out of the rough too much, making technology more important than skill. As of January 2010, all major tour players (PGA, Nationwide, European, LPGA, Futures, Canadian tour, etc) must use grooves in all clubs that measure more than 28 degrees (higher than a 5 iron) to this new specification. The newer grooves are smaller and are shaped more like traditional V-grooves from the early 1980’s and spin the ball about 50% less out of rough compared to the current grooves. In 2014, all major competition will be required to use the conforming groove (local PGA events, SCGA amateur events, USGA high level events except the US Open (they adopted it this year). In 2024 all players must use conforming grooves. That is a little over 13 years from now.

To implement use of the new conforming grooves, the USGA is mandating that all manufacturers of wedges have to remove all “non-conforming” clubs from their warehouses by December 31, 2010. That means, whatever is made prior to that point is still available, otherwise, no more “mac daddy” grooves.

If you are thinking about purchasing wedges with the current grooves, the time is now.
After January 1, 2011 it will be more and more difficult to find these. Special orders or specific lofts and lies will become scarcer as time goes by.

As always, if you have any questions, please ask our Head Golf Porfessional, Toby Todd.
